"Christmas (Babe Please Come Home)" is a rock song originally sung past Darlene Honey and included on the 1963 seasonal compilation album, A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector. The song was written by Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry and Phil Spector.

Upon release, the song did not detect commercial success merely in later years, information technology has gone on to get a Christmas standard. It charted for the first time on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2018 and has since peaked at number xvi. It has also peaked at number seven on the Holiday 100 chart. The song has also been covered many times; most notably by Mariah Carey, Michael Bublé and U2.

Groundwork and release [edit]

Love was given a demo of the song over the phone and went on to record the song.[i] The song was released as a unmarried in 1963.[ii] and in 1964 (Philles 10-125).[3] Upon release, the song was not a huge success but it has gone on to become a Christmas standard.[4]

In 1963, Phil Spector the producer plant that the song was strong enough to warrant a non-seasonal version and wrote a version "Johnny (Baby Please Come Home)" which Dearest likewise performed.[iv] This version was released to the public in 1976 every bit the final track on the Spector compilation album, Rare Masters Vol. 2.[four]

Chart performance [edit]

Despite not charting on release, the song has since found commercial success in later years. The song charted on the Billboard Holiday 100 chart at number 99 on the week ending December 13, 2014,[5] reaching a pinnacle position of number seven, seven years afterwards (on the week ending Dec 4, 2021).[vi] On the week ending December 29, 2018, the rails entered the master Billboard Hot 100 chart for the beginning fourth dimension at number 50,[7] and attained an all-time summit position of number 17 on the week ending Dec 11, 2021 (upon its third nautical chart re-entry).[8] On the official Great britain Singles Chart, "Christmas (Infant Please Come Home)" made its first appearance on the week of 5 January 2017 at number 74. Information technology entered the same chart over again one yr later at number 77, and once more on the calendar week of twenty December 2018 at number eighty, eventually reaching the number 22 two weeks later. It and so fabricated its overall chart peak of sixteen during the calendar week of January 1, 2022.[9]

Live performances [edit]

Showtime in 1986 and standing for 29 years, Darlene Honey performed the song annually on the final new episode before Christmas of Late Nighttime with David Letterman (NBC, 1986–92) and Belatedly Bear witness with David Letterman (CBS, 1993–2014), 28 times in all. The exception was in 2007, when Dear was unable to perform due to the Writers' Strike and a echo of her 2006 operation was shown instead.[10] She performed the song with Paul Shaffer and the show'south business firm band (The Globe's Most Dangerous Band at NBC, the CBS Orchestra at CBS).[eleven] Love also performed the vocal on Dec 24, 2013 in forepart of traders at the New York Stock Substitution as the market place closed for the day. Kickoff in 2015, the tradition of Love's annual performance of the song moved to The View (ABC, 2015–present), where it has connected during its last edition before Christmas in the years since.[12]

In December 2010, Rolling Stone mag ranked "Christmas (Infant Please Come up Habitation)" kickoff on its list of The Greatest Rock and Roll Christmas Songs, noting that "nobody can lucifer Beloved'southward emotion and sheer song power." The song has also been used in several movies.[xiv]

"Christmas (Baby Delight Come Dwelling)" was not widely recognized after its initial release but has gone on to exist covered many times by different artists over the years. One of the earliest cover version was by The Quiet Jungle, for the 1968 anthology The Story Of Snoopy'due south Christmas.[15]

The vocal was covered by Irish stone ring U2 in 1987 during a sound check in Glasgow, Scotland during their Joshua Tree Tour.[xvi] It was officially released on the compilation A Very Special Christmas the same year and on the anthology Unreleased & Rare in the digital box fixThe Consummate U2 in 2004.[17]

In 1994, Mariah Carey recorded a version and included it on her album Merry Christmas.[xviii] Carey'south version reached number 59 on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart in 2011 and number xx on the The states Vacation 100; the latter being the second highest position for the song on the chart afterward the original.[19] She offset performed her version in 2008 at The GRAMMY Nominations Concert Live.[xx] The song was as well added to her setlist for her All I Want for Christmas Is You lot: A Nighttime of Joy and Festivity concert residency.[21] In 2021, Carey covered the song again for her Christmas special, Mariah's Christmas: The Magic Continues.[22]

In 2011, Michael Bublé covered the song for his anthology, Christmas.[23] In 2021, he performed the song live with Hannah Waddingham on his Christmas in the City NBC special celebrating the 10th anniversary of his Christmas album.[24]

In 2021 Keke Palmer and the cast of Sing ii also covered the song for a 2021 Christmas commercial from Comcast'southward Xfinity and equally a bonus track from the original movement picture soundtrack of the aforementioned name.[25] Palmer and Tori Kelly performed the vocal live on The Voice season 21 finale with the superlative thirteen acts.[26] The song has as well been covered by Cher,[27] Foo Fighters,[28] Joey Ramone,[29] Jon Bon Jovi,[thirty] Jonathan Jackson,[31] Idina Menzel,[32] Picayune Mix,[33] and Noah Cyrus.[34]

Love herself has noted that her two favourite covers of the song are Mariah Carey's, because "her's is and so much like the original [...] with her corking voice", and U2's, "because it doesn't sound similar "Christmas (Baby)" and they had all three background vocals on it".[35]
